Amazon.com Tool size and volts dont always tell you the whole story. Take this drill/driver, for example: Its downright little, weighing in under 6 pounds, and it measures out at a tad over 9 inches. What a cute little drill, you say? Stand back this cute little drill packs a monster 450 in./lbs. of ripping torque, more than a fair number of bigger, beefier drills weve had the pleasure of using. Whats not to love, with all that power tucked into such a small, light, easy-on-your-body package? And theres awesome speed, too, with a three-tier system that offers 0 to 300 rpm in low range, 0 to 600 in mid-range and a top spread of 0 to 1,700 rpm in third speed, to suit whatever material youre drilling or driving into. Sometimes, you may encounter a little resistance if youre switching from low gear to high; if that happens, running the tool in mid-gear for a couple seconds completely alleviates any snag. We probably dont have to tell you about Makita quality; their tools are made to last. The gear transmission here is all metal; the locking ratcheting chuck grabs bits like super glue; brushes are easily accessible for routine maintenance and reduced down time; the reversing switch has a center neutral position that functions as a lock-off for safety. Theyve even put a lot of thought into the design of the grip; its rubberized and feels great in hand. Even the balance is perfect. Whether youre in the construction trade, an avid do-it-yourselfer or just looking to buy your first drill, you absolutely wont regret buying this one. -- Kris Jensen-Van Heste Whats in the Box Drill, two batteries, universal charger, Phillips/slotted bit, side handle, keyless chuck, battery cover, plastic tool case Features Powerful 450 in.lbs. of torque. Two-piece D-31 motor with dual ball bearings for longer motor life. 16 torque settings plus drill mode. 3-speed gear selection (0-300, 0-600, 0-1,700rpm) New ergonomic design for comfort and less operator fatigue.
